Brother of Carl Laemmle, former president of Universal Pictures. Laemmle was in the wine business as a trader but gave it up while traveling and picking up antiques. He eventually opened a store in Munich where he sold his objets d'art. Carl suggested that he open up a store in New York but Laemmle figured he would fare better in Germany as an art dealer, and did for over thirty years. During World War II, the family fled to America and settled in Los Angeles where Laemmle opened his business and partnered with his son Walter.
