A Canadian pioneer whose ancestors came by sail from the Scottish Isle of Lewis to Quebec in 1863, Mary Ann Miller passed away quietly in Olds on Saturday, January 13, 1990 at the age of 92 years.
Born Mary Ann MacAulay in Springhill, Quebec, she was one of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. John R. MacAulay. They had made the perilous month long trip from Scotland to Quebec with their parents and all their possessions.
The MacAulay family moved to a homestead near Monitor, Alberta in the early 1900's.
She married William Henry Miller, a baseball playing punter in Vegreville on January 15, 1918. At that time "Bill" worked for the Vegreville Observer. After living brief periods in Edmonton and Calgary, the Millers purchased the Crossfield Chronicle. That was followed by a move to Olds in 1936 with the purchase of the Olds Gazette.
Mrs. Miller was active in the newspaper especially during the difficult war years of 1939 to 1946. The couple retired in 1946 after selling the business to Neil Leatherdale and Ron Newsom.
She was predeceased by her husband, William in 1963; her son Kenneth in 1986; and a grandson, William in 1973. She was also predeceased by seven of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma Leatherdale, Olds; a sister, Margaret, Vancouver; and a stepson, Stanley, Vancouver. Also surviving are four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
