John was the son of Ira Posey and Lizzie Rogers Baxter and the grandson of William E. and Elisabeth Byrd Baxter. He married Nellie Hall in 1913. This marriage produced three children;

John died in Mobile, Alabama where he worked as a railroad clerk for the U.S. Post Office. He was returned home to State Line to be buried with 3 generations of his family in State Line Cemetery. He was 54 years old.
