William Lane, one of the oldest and most well-known citizens of Long Branch, died on Friday, November 22d, aged 77 years. Over a year ago Mr. Lane fell while alighting from a trolley car and injured his leg. The injury caused a disease of the bone. Last February he fell with a scuttle of coal and the bone broke where it was diseased. He recovered from the injury sufficiently to be about but it left him crippled. The injury was not the direct cause of his death, however, as anemia set in a week before his death.
Mr. Lane's paternal ancestors for two generations back were born at Long Branch. His grandfather, Cornelius Lane, fought in the Revolutionary war. William Lane attended the public schools of Long Branch until he was sixteen years old and he then learned the carpenter trade. He worked at this occupation for twenty years and then started in the real estate business. He negotiated many of the largest real estate deals at Long Branch and his uniform fairness in dealing with his clients earned for him the sobriquet of "Old Reliable." Mr. Lane is survived by a son, E. Lester Lane. Mr. Lane had been connected with the Masonic lodge for 35 years.
