He was a farmer, and he was a private with Burdett's Company, 26th Virginia Regiment, 1861-1865, in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

W Wash Brown died at his home on the Knobs in Wolf Creek district, Monroe county, on the 2nd inst, aged 67 years. He was an old Confederate soldier, having served in the 22nd Virginia Regiment. He was shot through the leg at the battle of Winchester in 1864. The limb had to be amputated, but the wound never healed and for the past thirty-three years has always given him more or less trouble until finally blood poisoning ensued which resulted in death.
