"William White and wife Elizabeth had a son, William Clark White b in Lincoln Co., Tennessee who was murdered Christmas Eve, 1864 by Bushwhackers who came to his farm [he was my direct ancestor]. William Clark White had moved from Lincoln Co., Tennessee thinking the political climate would be better as he did not believe in slaves and kept none and sent no sons to fight in that war. He gave to the soldiers what he had until his stock and supplies were so low he was concerned. He had 8 children and a wife due in less than a month. She delivered within 48 hours after her husband's murder. He had this two eldest sons, 15 and 16, take them into the woods and hide them. The Bushwhackers were made up of neighbors along for the ride and a Conf. leader and a young man named Benjamin Franklin Herrin of Lawrence Co TN. They were all drinking. The young man said his Capt. forced him to shoot William Clark White when he came out the door with his wife to talk to the men. William's wife, son and dau. and some neighbors who followed the group but were hidden stated all of the men were drunk and very pleased over the murder. I have gone on too long but fancy this an interesting story of those sad times. I have about 100 pages from National Archives about this court case."

In the story of William Clark White's military murder trial against William Frank Herron, William Clark's widow, Eliza, stated that John and Jim Tucker were with those bushwhackers and that they were nephews of her murdered husband. That would mean they were children of one of his siblings. Since I found Edith Chapman and her husband with two sons with same name and abt same ages we would think, I assume she is a daughter of William White, the RW soldier, that I just sent you RW pension papers about. I have tried my best to locate some one from that line to see if a Bible or family tradition is known of.
