Floyd Duane Irby, 70, died January 08, 2003 at the Abilene Regional Medical Center, Abilene, Texas of a long standing disease.

Mr Irby was born September 03, 1932 in Wichita, Kansas, the eldest son & first child of Floyd Anderson Irby and Bernice (Elmore) Irby.

Mr. Irby wa a Korean War Veteran serving on an amphibious ship during and in that war, his medals included the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the service on November 5, 1954, he was employed in the aircraft industry, working at Douglas Aircraft in California making the Navy A 3D Twin Jet Bomber. He then worked in auto sales for a Chevrolet dealer in Brea, California. In 1969, he went to Hawaii and worked there until 1977 at which time he entered the off shore drilling business in Texas and Louisiana. He left that business in 1983 and his deteriorating health left him in the care of the Veterans Administration at Biloxi, Mississippi, Louisville, Kentucky, Phoenix, Arizona and Reno, Nevada prior to coming to Abilene in December, 2002.

He was married on April 8, 1955 to Barbara Ellen Epperly and they had five children who survive him, Michael Duane Irby of Corona, California, Victoria Michelle Renteria, Mark Duane Irby, and John Duane Irby all of Costa Mesa, California, and Dawn Michelle Irby of Ozark, Missouri; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon Elmore Irby of Abilene, Texas and Wayland Leroy Irby of Stockton, California; two sisters, Maralea Rae Perez and Dena Diane Farr both of Pico Rivera, California; four nephews and six nieces.

Memorial services for Floyd Duane Irby will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2003 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home Chapel. Fr. Stephen Mahn Thapwa of the St. Andrew's Catholic Church will officiate. His cremated remains will be placed in the family niche in the Abbey Mausoleum, Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas. Military honors will be presented by the V.F.W. post 1186, Independence, Kansas.
