In Memoriam
To the Editor of the Cincinnati Gazette
Captain John H Dickerson, whose death occurred in St Louis on the 2nd inst, will be remembered by most of our citizens as the Chief Quartermaster stationed at this city during the late war. He was ordered here at the beginning of the war, and held the position of Quartermaster on the staff of General McClellan. Although changes were made in commanding officers, Captain Dickerson was always retained in the same position, because of his superior qualifications in his department. Surrounded as he was by the greatest obstacles, he encountered difficulties in his department that could not be overcome by a less determined and energetic mind. He was for a long time appreciated for his ability, energy and patriotism......
If credit and honor have not been awarded him while living, let it be done to his memory, as this is the only legacy left his children.

He was the first husband of:
Julia (Pratte): (Dau. of Gen. Bernard Pratte)
They had four children:
Louise, Sidney, Julia and Elizabeth
John H. Dickerson died, then she married:

William Gilpin, first Gov. of CO.
They had 3 children:
Louis Vidal "Bogy" Gilpin (Julia's uncle Louis "Bogy")
William "Willy" Gilpin. who died in a climbing accident at age 17;and Marie Louise Gilpin (twins).
