U.S. Congressman, U.S Senator. He graduated from Cornell University New York, in 1924, from the law department of Washington University Missouri, in 1926, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in St. Louis, Missouri. He served as assistant circuit attorney for St. Louis, (1929-34), served as a Colonel on the Governor’s staff, (1932-36) and lecturer on criminal jurisprudence at the Benton College of Law, (1934-38). In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth, Seventy-fifth and Seventy-sixth Congresses and served until his resignation in 1940. He then was circuit attorney for the City of St. Louis, (1941-44) and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1950, serving until his death.
