Notice of Gravestone ERROR:
This gravestone is a 2003 replacement of a crumbling one, but the new one has significant errors including the name. The original grave likely read PLW (Presley Lewis Woodyard) Pool, 1832-1912 but without any military information. (See Presley's bio below.) Explanation for error: The WPA in 1940 or the local veterans organizations in 2003 (see attached article) probably misinterpreted Presley' initials "PLW" Pool to be for his brother Peter Pool, b. 1845, who did serve in the confederacy. However, Peter died in 1905 in Missouri where he moved with his wife Elizabeth Tanner and children decades earlier. Peter is buried in Grand Pass, Missouri, where he and his family are listed in the 1900 census. (See Peter's FAG memorial 79545033 in Grand Pass. That gravestone photo has his confederate military information inscribed). Peter did not use L for a middle initial on any census or military documents which is.further evidence of later confusion with his brother's PLW initials. Note: Presley did not serve in the confederacy. He was drafted for the Union army (record on Ancestry.com) but there is no indication he served.

It is important to recognize this error and get the word out because many genealogy sites and trees are now listing the wrong names and family members for these two brothers because of this gravestone error. It is the hope of this writer and Pool relative that the local veteran's organizations or town can replace this stone with the correct information for Presley, especially since he was a prominent and longtime resident of Spencer.

BIO:
Presley Lewis Woodyard "PLW" Pool was the eldest son of William Pool (1808-1861) and Mary Ann Woodyard (1810-1861), who married on Jan. 5, 1832, in Wood County (probably in Parkersburg where Mary Ann lived). Presley was the older brother of Martha M. Pool, Mary A. Pool and Peter Pool. He is named after his maternal grandfather Presley Lewis Woodyard (1778-1838).

About 1853, Presley's family moved to Spencer, Roane County, where he married Mary Elizabeth Goff of Spencer on Sept. 29, 1857. The couple can be found in the 1860 to 1910 census reports in Spencer, and she as a widow there in the 1920 census. He listed his occupations as farmer, salesman and stock buyer. According to a 1904 profile of Presley on file at the Roane Co. Historical Society, he also taught a class after the war, worked for a cabinet business, and was "one of the oldest and most respected citizens of that locality." Presley and Mary had three known children:

- Charles Fenton Pool (1858-1860) - Goff Cemetery
- William Peter Pool (1862-1941) - Collins Chapel Cemetery, Fairfield Co., Ohio
- Margaret "Maggie" (Pool) Corder ((1867-1926) Spencer Memorial Cemetery
