Robert Dewey Beeton, 88 of Foxes Rest near Bluemont died Monday, Dec. 8, 1986, at the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg, W. Va.

He was bone on June 2, 1898, in Lexington, the son of the late William R. and Mattie Adams Beeton.

In his early youth he move to Washington, D.C. and following service in the U.S. Army during World War I, he pursued a long career in government service that included assignments with the U.S. Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Defense, the Army Corps of Engineers and for a number of years prior to his retirement in 1960, he was a contract negotiator for the U.S. Air Force.

He was a graduate of Southeastern University and for a short time following his retirement from government service he was an administrative assistant in the physics department at the University of Maryland.

He was a former vestryman and treasurer of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Purcellville, a member of the Masonic Order, Blue Lodge and 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a former board member and treasurer of the Purcellville Library and a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the 29th Division Association. He had served as commander of two Legion posts and was a former Legion historian for the Department of Virginia. He served as an office in Virginia State Guard during World War II.

Surviving are two brothers, Lionel E. Beeton of Richmond and Guy M. Beeton of Fairfax; and a sister, Mrs. Eric B. Hallman of Westfield, N.J.

The funeral was held at Union Cemetery in Leesburg on Friday, Dec. 12. Attending the funeral from the Lexington area were Mr. and Mrs. W. Arthur Beeton and Mrs. Mae Beeton Ewing.
