Richard E. Martin of Sandwich, IL passed away, Wednesday morning, June 10, 2009 at his home at the age of 84. He was born in Sandwich, IL on June 27, 1924 the son of Jacob and Alice (Neff) Martin. Richard graduated from Sandwich High School in 1942. He went to Michigan to assemble aircraft where he married his beloved wife of 62 years Frances M. Dannewitz of Plano, IL. Shortly thereafter he entered the Air Force where he trained as a pilot. After WW II, he and Frances built their current home in Sandwich, where they raised their four children. Prior to retirement he managed Processed Plastic Co. in Montgomery, IL. Richard shared his love of golfing with his wife and enjoyed his friendships made during their membership at Edgebrook Country Club. His hobbies also included gardening and woodworking. He and Frances were members of the Federated Church in Sandwich. He will be fondly remembered for his captivating storytelling and his sense of humor. He is survived by three sons, Richard A. (Rebecca) Martin of Charleston, IL, Ross (Patricia) Martin of Irvine, CA and Jeffrey (Carol) Martin of Tuscola, IL; one daughter, Becky (Steven) Schaffer of Memphis, TN; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother Wilbur (Loretta) Martin of Somonauk, IL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances, two brothers, Arthur and Henry, two sisters, Esther Catherine Martin and Edna Henrich. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2009 at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich with Reverend Dennis Heaney officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Sandwich, IL.
