Before his 15th birthday, Francis Marion joined the Union Army as a Private during the American Civil War, and mustered out six days after his 15th birthday, on 10 June, 1865.
He married Miss Gabriella "Rella" Dotson in Doddridge County, West Virginia on 14 November 1872. Together, they had seven children:

• Ora Byrd Waldo Nutter 1875 - 1958
• Theodore Waldo 1877- 1954
• Oscar Louis Waldo 1879 -1962
• Clyde Canada Waldo 1883- 1946
• Louise Waldo Fleming 1886 - 1939
• Augusta Waldo 1891 -1893
Francis Marion Waldo died at the Old Soldiers & Sailors Home in Ohio, and was buried in the Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio in September of 1928. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.
