Francis Marion Waldo was born on 4 June, 1850 in Clarksburg, Harrison, *Virginia* (West Virginia became a state in 1863, after leaving Virginia to remain with the United States) to Hickman Waldo and Mary Pritchard Williams Waldo.
Before his 15th birthday, Francis Marion joined the Union Army as a Private during the American Civil War, and mustered out six days after his 15th birthday, on 10 June, 1865.
He married Miss Gabriella "Rella" Dotson in Doddridge County, West Virginia on 14 November 1872. Together, they had seven children:

• Ora Byrd Waldo Nutter 1875 - 1958
• Theodore Waldo 1877- 1954
• Oscar Louis Waldo 1879 -1962
• Clyde Canada Waldo 1883- 1946
