Katie Walker Richburg, age 86, of Baird and a former long-time resident and educator in Sweetwater, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010, in an Abilene nursing center. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 28, 2010, in the Chapel of Parker Funeral Home in Baird, Texas, with Rev. Ward Hayes officiating. Interment will be in Ross Cemetery in Baird.
Katie was born January 21, 1924 in Baird, Texas, to Mathew Cartwright Walker and Sidney Emma Lee Harris Walker. She graduated from Hardin-Simmons College with both her Bachelor and Master's degrees in Education. Her teaching career began with Baird Schools in 1944 and continued at Atwell Schools until 1950 when she moved to the Sweetwater ISD. There she taught 3rd grade until her retirement in 1979. She was a Life Member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Katie married Reuben Jackson Richburg in Sweetwater, Texas, on June 3, 1974. He preceded her in death. After living in Sweetwater for 54 years, she moved to Baird where she has lived the past several years.
Survivors include 3 sisters-in-law, Ouida Walker of Baird, TX, Winnie Richburg of Anchorage, Alaska, and Marlene Richburg of Hermleigh, TX; several nieces and nephews, including, Janis Walker of Bakersfield, CA, Susan Walker, Sonia Walker, and Julie Walker and partner Dave Benton, Ray Walker and wife Tammy, Larron Walker, and Joey Walker, all of Baird, TX, and Quaid Richburg of McKinney, TX; 3 great-nieces and a nephew, Sally, Becky, Kaitlyn, and Mathew, all of Baird, TX; great-great-nephews Braeden and Tyler.
