NEW HAMPTON COURIER - February 14, 1889
DIED
SHERMAN - In New Hampton Feb. 12, 1889, David Sherman, in the eightieth year of his age.
Deceased was born in North Adams, Mass. and removed with his parents to Ohio in early youth. In 1834 he married Mary Sorter, and soon afterward removed to Illinois. In 1856 he came to Iowa settling in this county where he has resided until his death.
For several years the subject of this notice has been terribly afflicted and crippled, suffering much pain - at times - bearing it however with christian fortitude, for years ago he became a follower of Christ. The hardships and privation of the early settlers he shared with others who came here and opened up homes in this their new country. He leaves an aged wife, and seven children, all of whom were able to attend the funeral which took place Wednesday at 10:00 o'clock at the M.E. church, Rev Cochran improving the occasion with appropriate remarks, Rev. I. Brown being present took part in the exercises, and all that was mortal of David Sherman was laid to rest.
Make soft the pillow for the aged head for the journey has been a long one, and much of the road has been rough and hard to travel, he needs rest for the hands and feet are weary with long toil, but Him who he hath served "giveth his beloved sleep."
