Maria Refugio Godinez, age 104, of East Chicago, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Roberto) Valdes of East Chicago; stepson, Rafael (Josefina) Godinez of Mexico; three grandchildren: Adriana (Raymond) Martinez of Merrillville, Roberto (Edith) Valdes of Hammond and Sergio (Juana) Valdes of East Chicago; five great grandchildren: Nicklaus Martinez, Sophia Valdes, Sergio Jr., Sebastian and Christopher Valdes. Preceded in death by Rafael Godinez.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fife Funeral Home, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago, IN and 10:00 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in East Chicago with Rev. Juan Gonzalez, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial at St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation at the Fife Funeral Home from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Maria was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She came to the United States in 1917 and was the first queen of the Mexican Independence Day festivities in 1926.

In lieu of flowers, donations for masses would be appreciated.
