The son of John & Ann Fisher, in 1860 he was a blacksmith living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster November 8, 1862, as a private with Co. K, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company Jul 27, 1863.
