Butch was born June 15, 1923 in Kohler, WI to Walter J. Ireland Sr. and Flora (Zurheide) Ireland. Following graduation from Kohler High School, he furthered his education at Marquette University.
During WW II, Butch served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
On December 28, 1946 he was united in marriage to Mabel F. Spatzek of Sheboygan.
Walter was an insurance agent, owner of Kullman Insurance Agency, formerly located on S. 14th St. He retired in 1986.
Mr. Ireland was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler. He served as State of Wisconsin Assemblyman from 1958-1960; Sheboygan County Board Member for 35 years, 4 years as chairman. He also was chairman of the Sheboygan County Airport Building Committee, Sheboygan County Association of Commerce, Lightfoot School Committee, Rocky Knoll Building Addition and Conversion Committee, Great Lakes planning Committee, Building Committee for Sunny Ridge. He also served as Secretary of the Kohler Fire Department for 45 years, was member of the Kohler Police Athletic League, and was Life Member of American Legion Post 83.
Butch enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mabel, Walter is survived by a daughter, Sandra (George) Sherman of Greenfield, Indiana; four grandchildren, Heidi (Larry) Davidson, Kelly (Larry) Hutson, Jessica Sherman and Kelly (Trent) Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Ireland Hutson, Christina Hutson and John Hutson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Rudolph.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 24 at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Rev. Robert W. Steele, Pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, Kohler, will officiate. Burial will take place in Kohler Woodland Cemetery.
