First Lieutenant Coke was living in Dallam, TX when he entered the service and was the leader of the I & R Platoon, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.

On November 26, 1950, while leading his platoon up the valley of the Pungnyuri-gang, North Korea, he was wounded and taken Prisoner of War.

He died while a prisoner on December 28, 1951.

First Lieutenant Coke was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
