Leo first served in the National Guard, but after Pearl Harbor his unit turned Regular Army overnight! He served in AR as a Boot Camp instructor. Later, he spent his life as a salesman, traveling the Midwest. Each of his 4 daughters was born in a different city. It was a hard life with little money, but he did his very best. Leo retired from Golden Rule Insurance and was an active member of the Bethalto Assembly of God Church. His rich baritone was a vital voice in the choir and religious plays. He served as camp counselor for the Christian Royal Rangers for Boys and was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Assn where he was Treasurer. He won many trophies as a champion bowler, and was fond of chess and poetry,composing for everyone on all occasions. When he knew he was dying, he requested to do it alone. From the first diagnosis to the end was only 8 months. Death came at St. Clare's Hospital in Alton, IL and he was buried from Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Bethalto, IL. Cause of death: metastatic small-cell lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker, but had quit ten years earlier. Doctors shook a finger saying, "It wasn't soon enough!"
