At the time of her death Aunt Lil, as she was known, was Oberlin's oldest living relative. At the age of 16 she passed an examination allowing her to teach 1st and 2nd grades for 1 year but she did not become a teacher. For a time she did catering and in 1917 she became a practical nurse. She continued nursing until her retirement at age 83. She was a member of the First Church of Oberlin. She liked to write poetry. One of her poems on the Resurrection was read at her funeral.)
