Stricken at the throttle where he had served for 45 years, Thomas J. Melody, 68, veteran Chicago & Northwestern locomotive engineer and a former resident of Cooperstown, this county, died in a Sheboygan hospital on Saturday. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy.
Mr. Melody was working as usual on his engine in the C & NW yards at Sheboygan Saturday morning. The locomotive was taking on water and the train crew gave the signal to start. But the engine didn't move. B.N. Friemuth, the fireman, climbed into the cab to investigate and found the engineer dying on the floor. He was removed to the hospital but died a short time later.
The deceased had served with the Northwestern road since 1890. He was born at Negaunee, Mich., in 1862 and later moved to Cooperstown. After several years residence there he removed to Sheboygan. He was married to Catherine McGuinnes at Bear Creek, Wis., June 11, 1893. He was a member of St. Clement's Church, Holy Name Society of that church and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
He is survived by his wife, two children, Mary and James, two brothers, William of Kaukauna and Pat of Cooperstown and two sisters, Mary of DePere and Mrs. D.W. Lawlor of Green Bay.
