Michael was born in Zleby in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) on Feb 12, 1901. He was the second youngest son of Jan Linhart and Marie Prohaska Linhart (the tenth of their eleven children). Michael came to United States with his parents in 1905. The family first moved to Wisconsin and then moved to Chicago. Michael worked as a meat cutter for Furhrman and Forster and then worked in a variety of shops. He met Edith Brower in one of these shops; they married on April 19, 1922. Michael and Edith had two sons.
