Obituary: At 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon George Y. Stipp died rather suddenly at his residence in Blount township.
The deceased had been in feeble health for some time, but it was thought that his life would be spared yet awhile. He was a farmer and a local minister of the old Baptist church. He was born in Warren county, Indiana, on the 13th of April, 1826. Until eighteen years of age he worked on the farm, having but ordinary educational advantages. In 1830 he moved to Vermilion county with his parents, settling in Newell township. During his early life he taught about twenty-five schools. Mr. Stipp was three times married, first to Amelia A. Smith, on the 11th of November, 1847. She was born in this county on the 21st of November, 1831, and died on the 21st of July 1870. They had nine children by this marriage, six
living, Theodore L., Anna J., Sarelda A., Daniel V. W. and Samuel. Mr. Stipp was then married to Mary E. Hewes, on the 3d of February, 1871. She was born in Vermillion county, Ind., on the 27th of April, 1849, and died on the 24th of February, 1875. One child was the result of this marriage. He was then married to Elizabeth H. Hursely, on the 14th of January, 1877. She was born in Ohio on the 18th of July, 1838, and still survives him. Mr. Stipp held the office of justice of peace in Newell township for seven years, and was supervisor of the township four times. He was a Baptist minister of considerable natural ability. He had several public debates on various theological question, with other ministers; one with W. P. Shocky a noted Universalist preacher, and another with Prof. Clark Braden, of Cornell University, and with others of less note.
The funeral services took place from Pleasant View church, 7 miles north of the city, this morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Thompson, of Indiana, officiating and thence his burial in Pleasant View cemetery. The services were largely attended by his old friends and neighbors.
