Elisabeth Esther Comfort was a lifelong resident of Ottawa county. She was born July 24, 1894 to John N. and Cora (Cupp) Schur. She was educated in the public schools and taught two years in rural districts before her marriage to Clarence H. Comfort on April 8, 1914. To this union two children were born. They worked diligently on the family farm until his death March 17, 1944. She moved to Wells the following month.
She continued serving her community as both a practical nurse and a seamstress. She also cooked lunches for the Wells school for many years.
Elisabeth was an active member of the Wells United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Her interest in the church and its activities continued during the 23 months she resided at the Ottawa County Hospital. She died there July 18, 1987, six days before her 93rd birthday.
She is survived by a daughter Charlotte Crow of rural Minneapolis; a son Ernest and his wife Evelyn of Falls City, NE; a brother John L. Schur of rural Minneapolis; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 21, 1987, 10:00 a.m. at the Shields Funeral Home. Rev. Craig Hauschild officiated. Musicians were Wendee McVicker, vocalist, and Mrs. Jim Bruce, organist. Casket bearers were: Carmen Siler, Marvin Hamm, Weston Comfort, Leslie Mars, Fred Doering, and Eugene Whitley. Interment was in Bennington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wells United Methodist Church.
