Biography:

Fern Inez Shroll was born on 10 Dec 1921 to Edward Clyde Shroll, Sr. and Zella Dyess Shroll in DeQuincy, Louisiana. She grew up in DeQuincy working hard at school and with family chores common to a large family. After high school, Fern went to work as a mechanic at the Chennault Air Base in Lake Charles, LA.

At the Air Base, she met Minor Griscom, a native of Camden, NJ and member of the Army Air Corps; they were married on 5 January 1945. The newlyweds lived in Lake Charles until Minor finished his term of service in the military. After this, Fern and Minor returned to his home state of New Jersey and settled in Salem.

In Salem, they raised two sons, William and Minor, Jr. Fern was a stay-at-home mom who took care of her family and was an active member of First Baptist Church.

After the death of her husband in 1998, Fern moved to Lancaster, PA to be near her son William and his wife, Mary Ann. Mary Ann cared for Fern closely for the duration of her life as she struggled with Alzheimer's disease.

Fern passed away at the age of 80 and was buried next to her husband in Woodstown, New Jersey at the Salem County War Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery.

She was survived by her son William Griscom and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Patton Griscom of Lancaster, PA, grandchildren, Bill, Sonya, and Andrew, three brothers, Carroll Knight, DeQuincy LA; Edward C. Shroll, Sulphur LA, Everett Shroll of Santa Ana, CA, and three sisters, Edna Shroll Palermo of Yucaipa CA, Ira Shroll Broxson of Merryville LA, and Elsie Shroll Crewell, DeQuincy LA.
