Second (surviving) daughter of the famous English eighteenth century portrait painter, Thomas Gainsborough. Although her precise date of birth is unknown, it would presumably be 3 days before her baptism as this was the custom in past centuries in England. Baptised on 22 August, 1751. Attended Blacklands School, Chelsea, London (a site now opposite Chelsea Common by Sloane Square). In addition learnt drawing and studied music becoming an accomplished amateur musician at the harpsichord. Affectionately nicknamed "The Captain" by her father, presumably because she was by nature somewhat bossy. Margaret never married. When her parents died she was left an inheritance and went with her older sister to live at Brentford and then Brooks Green and finally Acton, Greater London. Interestingly eccentric in character, she was named as the executor in both her parents Wills and looked after all finances as the more responsible of the two sisters until her death. In this way her older sister, Mary (Gainsborough) Fischer, who unfortunately suffered from a gradual mental illness, received an allowance from her. Buried on 27 December, 1820.
