Captain in the 33rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In command at the Battle of Stones's River, Tennessee, December 1862.
Major Ellis was killed in the Civil War Battle of Chickamauga September 19-20, 1863. His remains were recovered and subsequently brought home by the town of Manchester Ohio for burial in Manchester. His wife Margaret (Baldwin) Ellis and family moved to Shelby County, Missouri 1868. Margaret and daughters Hellena and Emma buried Pleasant Prairie Cem, Shelby Co MO. Son John J. Ellis buried Labelle MO. Son Dyas B. Ellis in Monroe County 1880 and 1900.
