LeRoy Ellington Davis was a farmer and lived at Heard's Beat in Perry County, AL. He enlisted in the United States Army as a single man at the age of 21 to the Perry Co. Volunteers in the Mexican War and traveled to Texas to fight. This is the portrait of him proudly wearing the uniform of the United States Army, which he worn as a young man.

During the War of Southern Independence, LeRoy enlisted in Company A of the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment, and later was given the rank of captain for his experience in the Mexican War. He was paid a pension for his service in the Mexican War. Beginning January 24, 1895, his wife Martha J. Davis collected a widow's pension after his death.

On December 12, 1871, he purchased land for $250 from the heirs of grandfather John Wright.
