U.S. Civil War - Enlisted in Grand Traverse County, Michigan for a 3-year term; he was residing in Glen Arbor Township, Leelanau County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 26 years of age; mustered in on 2 February 1862 at Chicago, Illinois, Batty I, Illinois 1st Light Artillery as a Private; re-enlisted as a veteran and served as a blacksmith; mustered out on 10 February 1865. He was injured in his eye and ankle.

Service: Battles of Shiloh and Corinth. Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign, "Tallahatchie March," Wall Hill, Siege of Vicksburg, Jackson , Chattanooga Tennessee, Mission Ridge, Knoxville, Scottsboro Alabama, Battle of Nashville and related campaigns. Mustered out 10 February 1865 at Eastport, Mississippi.
