Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as US Secretary of Agriculture during the administration of President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1971. During his tenure, he implemented the Food and Nutrition Service to manage food programs for the under-privileged and the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to coordinate efforts with officials at the state and local level. In addition, he extended the food stamp program. Raised on his family's farm, he attended Purdue University from where he attained his BS, MS and PhD. He was Professor of Agricultural Economics and served as Director of Agricultural Experiment Station at Michigan State University, before his tenure as Chancellor of the University of Nebraska from 1954 to 1968. After his years in US Government, Hardin served as vice president for research with Ralston Purina and Chairman of Ralston Purina of Canada from 1971 to 1980. He died from natural causes.
