Obituary of Mrs. W. I. Miller.
Rachel Elsie Hawk was born January 27, 1866 near Victoria Illinois and passed away at Junction City, Kansas, February 11, 1918. Her death came as a result of a critical operation. She was 52 years old at the time of her death. She moved with her parents in 1867 to Garden Grove, Iowa, from there they went to Rooks county, Kansas and settled on a homestead in 1878. While living there she gave her heart to God and united with the M. E. church; in which service she was always faithful. She was united in holy wedlock to William I. Miller. They lived in Rooks county until 1890 when they moved to Clay county and settled in Athelstane Twp. where they lived until the time of her death. To this happy union was born six children, two of whom preceded her in death, they dying in childhood. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, two sons, two daughters, three brothers, two sisters and a host of near relatives and friends.
Those of her near relatives who were present at her funeral were her daughter Mrs. Floy Eisele and husband, son Orla and wife of Boise, Idaho, Mrs. Grace Green, another daughter and husband, of Industry, Kansas, her son Neil Miller who lives at home, and a step-daughter, Mrs. A. L. Vanzant (sic) of Los Vegas (sic), N. M., a sister, Mrs. W. L. Davenport and Mr. Davenport of Plainville, Kansas, A. E. Hawk, a brother, of Stockton, Kansas, J. V. Hawk, a brother, from Helena, Montana, Mr. Alta Miller of Boise, Idaho, and Mrs. C. Flemming of Wakefield, Kansas. W. T. Hawk of Jenny Lind, California, and Mrs. Fannie Magee of Canadian, Texas were unable to be present.
It was arranged to hold the funeral on Friday the 16th but this was postponed until the next day because of a wreck which hindered J. V. Hawk from arriving in time.
The service was conducted in Ebenezer church by the Rev. C. G. Gilbert, assisted by Rev. D. F. Hanstedt. The Missionary Society of which she was a member furnished the music. The whole service was very impressive and spoke of the high esteem in which she was held in the community.
Mrs. Miller has been a faithful, loving, devoted wife and mother, carefully attending to every duty of home and family. Her active faithful life will not only be missed here but also in the church where she was such a faithful member and untiring worker.
As a member of the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Board she was one of the most loyal and at the time of her death was secretary of the same. Her council and cheer will be greatly missed in this branch of work. She was teacher of a class of Sunday School girls and was dearly loved by them all, whose hearts she had not only won to herself but to a higher faith in the Christian life.
It can be said of her as of the one of old, "She hath done she could." Interment was made in the Athelstane Cemetery.
