The disaster killed all 258 people aboard and 22 on the ground in the town of Lockerbie. It was two days before christmas and two days after the Jumbo Jet went down, and Mr Cardwell found himself at his Cresco, Monroe County, residence waiting for word in the remains of his eldest son. Tim's mother, Barbara and brother, Michael, 20 shared the burden. "What can you say when you lose a son?" Mr Cardwell asked.
In London, an unidentified caller, Thursday claimed, an Islamic group blew up the Boeing 747 to avenge the U.S. downing of an Iranian civilian airliner in July. Two weeks ago the U.S. State Department warned its embassies of such a bomb threat against a Pan Am Jet, with a similar flight plan. Federal Authorities did not make the warning public.
