Henry Hunter Oliver attended Yale University for a year, then Princeton, where he graduated in 1853 with a degree in law. He never practiced law, but ran the family plantation in Dallas County, AL. Records received from Princeton were obviously provided by someone well after his death and contain some errors. While he was reported to have been an officer in the Civil War, his service records indicate that he enlisted as a private and was soon discharged for medical reasons. The Princeton records give his date of death as July 1864, as does his tombstone in Magnolia Cemetery. However, the Episcopal Church in Carlowville in Dallas County records his burial on June 28, 1862 at his home in Portland. It is assumed that his body was moved at some later date to the plot in Magnolia where his wife and inlaws are buried, after memories of dates, etc. had faded.

His picture is from "Class of 1847: The Centenial Class, College of New Jersey, Princeton, New Jersey," p. 67.
