John Taylor Richards was the son of Francis Richards and Esther Ann ( Hester) Taylor. He was the sixth of ten children born to this union, and the third of four sons. On July 4, 1903, he was united in marriage with Christiana Knight. This union lasted only three months when his wife passed away. After his loss, he headed to the United States to join his brothers in Morenci Arizona, finding work in the mining camps of Arizona. A return to England, and a second marriage to Laura Sloggett. He brought her back to Arizona, and welcomed a son, Percival James in 1909. Jim and Laura enjoyed 40 years of marriage before he passed away.
