Ernest's father was a stock trader and farmer; his mother was a homemaker.

During the early years in St. Louis, Ernest was a uniformed Western Union messenger boy.
The family was living in E. St. Louis in 1909-10 when he became a locomotive fireman for the Vandalia Railroad Co.; resigned and moved to Olney before 1918.

Between 1919-1922 he worked at Zimmerley's Garage in Olney, IL. Later he was a general salesman and paint store manager before becoming a distributor for the Bowes Sealfast Automotive Corp. in the mid 1930's. He continued with them until the time of his death.

Vandalia Railroad Company (now the St. Louis Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad)

He was made a Master Mason in Euclid Masonic Lodge No. 573 at Terre Haute, Indiana, on October 27, 1914, and affiliated with Olney Lodge No. 140 on January 17, 1918, serving as Worshipful Master in 1922 and 1926.

He received the Cryptic Rite in Olney Council No. 55 on January 8, 1918, and served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 1932. He served on several committees in the Grand Council and on September 19, 1941, he was elected and installed Most Illustrious Grand Master. He was exalted in Richland Chapter No. 38 (now Henry Godeke Chapter) on December 28, 1917, and served as Excellent High Priest in 1921. He is a member of Gorin Commandery No. 14, K.T. and served as Commander in 1944 and is the Eminent Grand Standard Bearer of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Illinois. He is also a member of Springfield Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.

Companion Campbell is a member of Illinois Priory No. 11 Knights of the York Cross of Honour. In the Grand Chapter, he served as District Inspector from 1923 to 1933; on the Board of Grand Examiners from 1933 to 1938 and in October, 1938 was elected Grand Master of the First Veil. He was regularly advanced each year and on October 30, 1947, was elected Most Excellent Grand High Priest.
