In Sept 1861, at the age of 23, Lot enlisted in Co D 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was promoted to Full Captain in 1863. Lot mustered out on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
Capt. Abraham returned to Henry County and on 13 Sept 1865 married Sarah C Alden, dau/o Zephaniah Alden and Damaris Thompson. Lot and Sarah had four children: John, Sarah, Mary, and Kate.
Sarah was killed in a runaway accident in 1888. Lot married Mrs. Mary E. Blacker on 22 Oct 1891 and they had one son, Frank.
Lot was a prominent farmer of Center Township, an honored veteran of the Civil War, and a Republican leader in his district. He was elected to the state senate in 1881 and served until 1884.
Lot died at the age of 82 years.
