John Frank Stephens, 60, formerly of Spur, passed away April 5, 2010, in Grapevine. Services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Girard Cemetery Chapel in Girard, with Mike Hairgrove officiating and Garth Gregory assisting.
Interment will follow in Girard Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
John was born Dec. 15, 1949, in Lubbock to Walda "Blue" and Melvina Stephens. He was raised in Spur and graduated from Spur High School in 1969. John relocated to Tyler and worked as a ranch manager and corporate pilot. He also served as a reserve deputy sheriff for the Smith County Sheriff's Department. John moved to Grapevine where he was employed for 19 years as a captain for American Eagle Airlines. John was a Longhorn cattle salesman and enjoyed working with quarter horses. Besides John's love of being a cowboy and a pilot, he loved and treasured his family. He especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. John married Nancy Smith on Feb. 29, 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; one son, Shannon Stephens; one daughter, Stephanie Verdoorn; four grandchildren, Sloan Blue Stephens, Sydney Melynn Stephens, "Budly" Daniel James Verdoorn and baby girl (expected to arrive in June) Verdoorn.
