Charles was born a little over three months after his father had been killed. His father was a logger and a tree fell on him. The first two or three years after he was born, he and his mother continued to live with the Salard family.

Even though he never knew his father, he did know and love the other Salard relatives. We would sometimes stop by the nursing home in Pineville and visit with his Grandma Salard and Uncle Corby.

We attended a Salard family reunion in Cloutierville sometime during the 1980's and I met a lot of the family there. One in particular that I do remember was his Aunt Maebelle. Charles always spoke so fondly of Aunt Maebelle.

We drove to Cloutierville and stopped at the old Carnahan Store. At the time I was uncertain how the Carnahan's were related, but hanging on the wall was a portrait of "Old Papa" (Salard). Now that the store has closed, I have wondered many times what ever became of that portrait.

His first job was working for a meat packing company in Alexandria. Following that job, he learned to drive a truck and that is what he retired from.

He had many "hobbies" through the years... Dirt car racing, drag racing, fishing and tinkering around with old cars. I asked him about hunting and he said that he went deer hunting one time, shot a deer and saw a tear from its eyes and never had the heart to hunt again. I know as a child, it was a steady requirement to allow food on the table. I believe that his favorite hobby was collecting vintage cars. The old Golden Hawk that he had when he was younger was his favorite car. He searched for many years to find a replacement, but never did. The way he explained it was that he got home one day and found his mother had sold it for scrap iron. Knowing Charles, that car had probably been sitting up and not running for a while prior to his mother selling it.

He spoke often of his years growing up and some of it was with sadness since he never saw his biological father.
