Chesterton resident Leonard G. "Bud" Schilla dies Wednesday June 11, 1997 at 8:59 at the Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso. He was 69.
He was born Sept. 1, 1927 in Michigan City, the son of Leonard and Mary (Hyska) Schilla.
The co-owner of Dres-Well Cleaners in Chesterton, he formerly owned Industrial Roofing here.
In 1995, Schilla opened a wildlife exhibit, featuring more than 300 animals, in the former Industrial Roofing site on Fourth Street in Chesterton. Schilla wanted to collection to be used for educational purposes.
He was a member of St. Patrick Church and the Safari Club, where he had 38 mentions in the club's international record book.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth A. (Deardurff) Schilla; children Cheryl (husband Bob) Goodwin of Michigan City, Debbie (Don) Dean of Portage and Ross (wife Mary) Schilla of Chesterton; step-children Diane Johnson of LaPorte, Susan (Terry) Singer of Madison, Wisc., Michael (Debbie) Pieszchala of LaPorte, Connie Pieszchala of Winter Springs, Fla., Dick (Karla) Pieszchala of Hobart, and Chris (Carol) Pieszchala and Scott (Karen) Pieszchala, both of Valparaiso; 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Norbert (Sandy) Schilla and Daniel (Dorothy) Schilla, both of Michigan City.
His first wife, Marjorie, Schilla preceded him in death on June 5, 1981.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chesterton. Father Lawrence Heeg will officiate. Burial will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St., Chesterton.
Memorials may be given to the St. Patrick Building Fund.
