Harriet Francis aka "Fanny" was the 3rd child of Evan W. Haney and Josephine Caroline White. Although their marriage documents cannot be found, it is believed that Evan Haney married Josephine Caroline White in Decatur County, Tenn about 1853. A letter written to my grandmother, Lela Minnie Poe DIXSON, said that Evan & wife, J. C had two girls before deciding to move to Texas about 1859. Grandpa Haney asked if they wanted slaves or money. Since the slaves would soon be free, they chose money. They came to Texas with a trunk full of confederate money that would soon be worthless. Someone in the family still has the trunk.
By 1860, Evan, wife, Josephine Caroline, and daughters Mary, and Martha are found living in Richland Crossing, near Dresden, west of Corsicana, Texas, in Navarro Co TX. Another girl, Harriet Frances (Fanny)Haney was born to them 19 July 1860.
In 1862 he joined CSA: His CSA records ;Enlisted - May 12, 1862, Dresden (hard to read), by Capt. S. Wright
Address - Richland Crossing, Navarro, Co. Texas, He signed his name.Occupation – Farmer; Age 30; Height - 5'8"; Eyes – Blue; Hair – Auburn Remarks: Died at Cotton Plant, Ark.; Nov.19, 1862 of measles.
About a month after his death, his wife gave birth to my great grandmother, Jo Evan Haney and then Josephine Caroline Haney died leaving four orphaned daughters who were given to live with their Uncle James Hainey of Jasper. He, in turn, farmed them out to other families. Mary lived with a family by the name of Perkins and later married John Wesley Spence. It is unclear who raised Martha, but she later married Mose Spence, John Wesley's brother. They were sons of George Jackson Spence & Elizabeth Strickland. Fanny went to live with Bueford Spence, a brother of George Jackson Spence. There Fanny received the only schooling of the four orphans and married George McDaniel Woodell, Bueford Spence's nephew .
