John Charles Hetzel received a B. S. degree from Ottawa University in Franklin County, Kansas. He received an M. S. degree from Pittsburgh State University in Crawford County, Kansas. He was in public education for 31 years as a teacher, coach, and school administrator. Mr. Hetzel retired a Major in the United States Air Force Reserves. He served in the South Pacific during World War II as an Information and Education officer.

J. C. Hetzel was married to Edith Louise Ten Eyck on January 26, 1942. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, a brother, three grandchildren, and many friends and family members.

J. C. Hetzel was a farmer and stockman in the Colony area for forty-four years. He was a member of the Methodist church, Kansas National Educator's Association, Retired Officer's Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, The Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Ottawa University Braves Athletic Hall of Fame.
