Hal attended Montana State College and served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Air Corps during World War I before being graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of law degree in 1922.

In the same year he joined the Marathon Oil Co. in Shelby, Mont., and in 1924 was named assistant division attorney at Casper, Wyo. He became division attorney in 1927 and served in that capacity until 1930 when he was transferred to the Findlay general office.

Mr. Stewart was named assistant general counsel in 1950 and in 1954 was elected Marathon's general counsel and a director. He retired in 1961 after 39 years with the company.

Long active in community affairs, Mr. Stewart had been president, vice president and trustee of the Blanchard Valley Hospital Association; president of the Kiwanis Club and the Findlay Area Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the Hancock District, Boy Scouts, and a member of the Put-Han-Sec Area executive board; a member of the American Bar Association of Ohio and Findlay, the Presbyterian Church, the Masons, Elks, American Legion, Sigma Chi fraternity and the Findlay Country Club.

During Mr. Stewart's term as president of the Blanchard Valley Hospital board, the bond issue was passed for the construction of the new hospital.
