Thomas E. Gill was the son George Washington Gill and his wife, Martha Pelisha "Patsy" Grisham.

Thomas served as a private with the 81st Illinois, Company K, along with several of his relatives, including his brothers Edwin Gill and James M. Gill. Thomas suffered a gunshot wound to his left foot on 22 May 1963 while participating in a Union charge during of the Siege of Vicksburg. He also suffered his entire life with chronic diarrhea from disease contracted while he in the service.
