Darrell D. Adamson, 64, of rural Cherokee, Iowa, died Saturday, January 13, 1996, at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital due to complications of a stroke. The son of Whitfield and Lola (Grove) Adamson. Darrell was born August 26, 1931, in Hastings, Nebraska.
He grew up in Nelson, Nebraska. Darrell graduated from Cherokee High School in 1949 and from the University of Nebraska in 1953 with a degree in agriculture. He was a walk-on for the wrestling team at the University of Nebraska.
In June 1953 in Nebraska, he married Phyllis Everley. She died October 25, 1957. Darrell married Juanita Ohlson July 17, 1960, in Cherokee.
He farmed all his life and retired in January 1995. He lived on a farm in Pilot Township, having been a resident of Cherokee County since 1940. Mr. Adamson also served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Darrell was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, having served on various church boards in different capacities. He loved missions and taught the high school Sunday School class. He served on the Cherokee School Board for nine years and the Aurelia Elevator Board for many years, and was an active member of the Guideons.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita; two daughters, Sharman Wirtzfeld and her husband Dieter of Riverside, California, and Heidi O'Connor and her husband Tom of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sons, Mark Adamson of Kansas City, Missouri, Blaine Adamson and his wife Audrey of Rooty Hill, Australia, and Bruce Adamson and his wife Julie of Abidjan Cote' de'Ivoire, Africa; 11 grandchildren, Shane, Kip, Typson, Beau, Paul, Dane, Mark, Elianna, Eston, Taylor and Eamon; two sister (sic), Twila Griffith and her husband LeRoy of Scottsdale, Arizona and LaDonna Swanson of Minneaspolis, Minnesota; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, rural Aurelia, Iowa, with Rev. Sherman Swan officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery in rural Cherokee. Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee, was in charge of the arrangements.
