OBITUARIES
John A. Brignani Sr., 83, Baker
Longtime Mountain View Resident

Anthony Brignani Sr. belonged to a View that no longer exists. When the San Jose native was turning out and wedding cakes from his Mountain View Pastry Shop on Castro Street downtown the city was barely 10,000 people. "He was very much a master at decorating in those years," said his son, John Brignani Jr. "He was quite good at his trade. He had a good following in Mountain View."
"Johnny the Baker," as he was known, died Tuesday in Reno of heart failure. He was 83.
Mr. Brignani took a part of the old downtown with him. It was a Mountain View of orchards and packing sheds, not of silicon chips and circuit boards.
"Those days are long gone," said his son. "Those were the days of simple fun. . . . Those were warm and friendly times."
Mr. Brignani's close friends were neighboring shop owners. Many, too, have died.
There was Elmo J. "Buzz" Bazzano, the pasta maker at the State Delicatessen. Bazzano was Mr. Brignani's golfing buddy for many years after their retirement.
There was also Al and Doris Cavagnaro, the owners of the Town Club next door. The bar expanded into the space occupied by the pastry shop after Mr. Brignani left.
Mr. Brignani was born in San Jose, whey he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1928.
He worked at various bakeries and Pastry shops in San Jose to hone his skills, his son said. He had dozens of books on the subject.
He opened the pastry shop in the 1940's his son said. He ran it for 16 years before going to work in flood control for Santa Clara County. While working in 1958, he saved a boy from drowning in a raging creek, a deed for which he received commendations from the county.
Mr. Brignani lived in Mountain View for 50 years. He helped start the first Babe Ruth baseball team there. In 1991, he and his wife of 58 years, Mary Evelyn, moved to Reno to be near their son's family.
Mr. Brignani's family was everything to him, said John Brignani Jr. He always found time for hunting and fishing with his son and grandchildren. Playing golf two to three times a week was a must.
He also loved to share his pastry recipe and baking skills with friends and relatives.
