He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1958 and attended the U.s Trade School in Kansas City Missouri studying Auto Mechanics for one year.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964. After his discharge from the service he worked for international Harvester in Ottumwa. They moved to Sigourney in 1971 when he began employment at Seeger Auto Supply, working there for 19 years He was then employed at Big A Auto Parts in Ottumwa until leaving in February, 1992, due to ill health.
He is survived by his wife, two sons James William (Bill) of Missouri and Thomas Jay of Delta; one daughter Rhonda (Mrs. Brent) Lindemann of Charlotte; his mother, Minnie one brother Richard of Sigourney, four grandsons; and three granddaughters. Preceded in death by his father Thomas J. Tollenaar
