Dr. J. N. Lamar Dies At Bruce - Pioneer Physician Passes Alter Many Years Of Service In This County.
Dr. James Nathan Lamar, age 90, a native of Calhoun County, who practiced his profession for many years at Banner and Bruce, died at his residence in Bruce on Monday, Nov. 17, following an illness of several days.
Dr. Lamar was a pioneer physician in the northern part of the county. He was a man of fine character and was a popular and successful doctor. Reared in the Parker-Salem community of Calhoun, he obtained his education by hard work and devotion to a cause. He began practicing in the days of the "horse and buggy" and knew the hardships of crossing streams where bridges were gone and of traveling for miles on horseback in freezing cold weather.
It was fine that in the latter years of his work as a doctor that he could travel to his patients with more comfort and safety.
Dr. Lamar had a wide circle of friends in the county. He was a descendant of one of the county's oldest families and was a man of strong convictions and decided character.
Funeral services were held for Dr. Lamar at Salem on November 18, at 2:00 P.M., conducted by Revs. J.B. Middleton, A.F. Brasher and E. Allen Bailey, followed by interment in the Salem cemetery. Cook Funeral Home, of Bruce, had charge of the funeral arrangements, with the following serving as pallbearers: Arch Murk, O.E. Stribling, Willie Speir, Ed. Quillen, Johnny Swaim and Lester Kimsey.
Dr. Lamar is survived by a daughter, Mrs. L.G. Adams, of Bruce; by a son, Mell Lamar, of Grenada, and by five grandchildren.
