Anderson was 42, and living in Libertyville, Jefferson County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. M of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 2, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov. 25, 1861.

Anderson died June 9, 1863, at, or near, Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, on the riverboat "Gladiator" of chronic diarrhea.
