The former Alice Josephine Jeter, a county native and now a resident of Autumn Meadows in Gambrills, Maryland, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, July 22.
She was born to Tillman E. and Willie (Spencer) Jeter of Paces, Va. (now Sutherlin), and received her formal education in the Halifax County Public School system, graduating as valedictorian from Turbeville High School.
In July 1938, she married Paces resident John Manning Barksdale, son of John Lawson and Nannie (Manning), and moved to Anne Arundel County, Maryland, by the spring of 1940.
She is the mother of four children, all born in Maryland – the late Thomas Barksdale, Mark Barksdale of the homeplace in Lothian, Maryland, Christine Peeler of Conway, South Carolina, and Margo Cardelino of St. Charles, Maryland.
